Performance of the brand
According to the September update of the Brand Finance Global 500, Société Générale’s (SocGen) brand value fell by $482 million in a year. Banking brands all over the world have suffered from the global downturn in the economy and the lack of any real growth has prolonged the problems. Between the months of January and September 2011, $26.9 billion worth of brand value has been lost by the world's top banking brands collectively.
SocGen is the fifth largest corporate and investment bank in the Euro zone. The group operates across 85 countries and has 33 million customers serviced by 157,000 employees. The brand has an A+ rating by both Standard and Poor’s and Fitch rating agencies.
In March 2009, SocGen received the largest pay-out from AIG’s bailout, amounting to US$11.9 billion, compared with other European banks including Deutsche Bank and Barclays. SocGen struggled in the first two quarters of 2009 reporting significant losses due to a devaluation of assets linked to U.S. real estate and increased losses on bad loans.
At the time of writing, SocGen have recently released first half year results of €1.6 billion. However, the publication of these results was overshadowed by persistent rumours of liquidation and bankruptcy. The original source of the rumours is unknown, although it led German Commerzbank to claim that SocGen had a drop of 92% in Q2 which it blamed on the writing down of Greek debt. French banks have been far more susceptible to the Greek debt than others. SocGen, however, have completely denied the reports. To the extent that British newspaper the Daily Mail was forced to retract their stories on the bankruptcies claims and print an apology. SocGen released a statement claiming that “Société Générale categorically and vigorously denies all the market rumours which have affected its share price today. These rumours are completely unfounded”. The bank has asked financial services to investigate the source of the rumors, although analysts maintain there is no smoke without fire.
