Company history

Cisco Systems was founded in 1984 by Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner – a married couple who worked as IT staff at Stanford University. Initially, Cisco was strictly a router and switch vendor. Whilst it wasn’t the first company to develop and sell a router, it was one of the first to sell commercially successful routers supporting multiple network protocols. Over time, Cisco has branched from making gear for data networks, and now provides all kinds of equipment for voice communications and video systems. For example, its latest commercials advertise its new product "

Cisco currently employs over 70,700 across America, Canada, Japan, Europe, as well throughout many Emerging markets, and Asia Pacific. It's headquarters are situated in San Jose, California.

John Chambers - Chairman and CEO

Mr Chambers has been CEO of Cisco Systems since 1995, and was named chairman of the board in 2006. Before joining Cisco, Chambers worked at Wang Laboratories (1982-1990), and IBM (1976-1982).
