Performance of the brand

A state owned bank and the second of China’s big four banks to appear in the BrandFinance® Banking 500 this bank is the oldest in China tracing its origins back to 1912.

The Bank of China building in Hong Kong is one of the city’s most iconic buildings and an example of the large levels of brand awareness within China. However outside of China the brand has relatively low awareness especially amongst consumers. The bank has branches in various overseas locations, such as New York, yet these branches are only affiliates if one deposits money with Bank of China in China, one cannot access their money overseas. This low international brand awareness is the reason why the brand value accounts for only 11% of Market Cap. This is considered very low when, compared to its competitor brands in the top 20.
