Performance of the brand

Banco do Brasil, commonly known as BB, is Brazil’s oldest active bank. It is government controlled and holds a strong position in the Brazilian retail and commercial banking sectors. Like many other large emerging market banks the company was relatively unaffected by the global financial crisis and has remained buoyant in the aftermath.

Furthermore, like many emerging large market corporations, the bank has observed major improvements in its brand value over the past few years, climbing 115 places in the BrandFinance® Global 500 2010 to 118th and a further 23 places in 2011 to 95th. In the most recent update of the Global 100 2011, which accounted for major changes to the global economy throughout  the year, the company gained an additional three places and is now 92nd with a brand value of $9.3 billion.

The impressive improvements for BB’s brand can be attributed to the massive increases in the size of its markets and the expansion of its businesses both domestically and internationally. Over the past two decades the company has embarked on a mission to consolidate and propagate its brand which at one point had a differing appearance from branch to branch. The bank has gone to great efforts to unify and improve its brand by establishing a cohesive visual identity through the use of the same logos, colour schemes, layouts, furnishings, business cards and stationery.

Furthermore, BB’s relative recent stability as well as the stability of the Brazilian economy has enabled the company to begin establishing its brand abroad. The bank has opened offices in North America, Europe, the Middle-East and Asia and has made significant acquisitions in South America. In addition, the bank is considering expansion on the African continent.
