Michael Smith, Chief Executive Officer
Michael Smith has been Chief Executive Officer of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) since October 2007.
Until June 2007, Mr Smith was President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; Chairman, Hang Seng Bank Limited; Global Head of Commercial Banking for the HSBC Group and Chairman, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. Previously, Mr Smith was Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Argentina Holdings SA and was subsequently appointed Chairman of HSBC in Argentina in 2000.
Mr Smith joined the HSBC Group in 1978 and during his 29-year career he held a wide variety of posts in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Middle East and South America, including appointments in Commercial, Institutional and Investment Banking, Planning and Strategy, Operations and General Management.
Mr Smith graduated with honours in Economic Sciences in 1978 from City University of London.
He is a Member of the Asia Business Council, the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Bankers’ Association Council. Mr Smith is also a member of the Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council, the Shanghai International Financial Advisory Council and a Fellow of The Hong Kong Management Association. He is also a director of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children and a member of the Financial Literacy Advisory Board.
Mr Smith was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2000 and a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Merite Agricole in 2007.
He is married with three children. His interests include wine, golf and classic cars.
Peter Marriott, Chief Financial Officer
Peter Marriott was appointed to his current position of Chief Financial Officer in July 1997. He is responsible for all aspects of Group Financial Management including control of the structure of ANZ’s balance sheet, finance management information systems and performance management.
Group Financial Management comprises Group Finance, Group Legal and Company Secretary's Office, Group Taxation, Group Treasury, Group Investor Relations and Internal Audit.
Peter has been involved in the finance industry for more than 20 years. He joined ANZ in February 1993 as General Manager, Group Accounting and was then appointed Group General Manager, Credit/Risk Management in 1995 and CFO in 1997.
Prior to his career at ANZ, Peter was a Partner in the Melbourne office of the then KPMG Peat Marwick, responsible for the co-ordination of KPMG’s Melbourne banking and finance practice.
Peter is also a Director of ASX Limited and Chairman of the ASX Audit and Risk Committee.
Peter is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants, a fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
David Cartwright, Chief Operating Officer
David Cartwright is ANZ's Chief Operating Officer. David has responsibility for ANZ's Global Services and Operations, and accountability for the global delivery of shared services spanning property, sourcing, accounts payable, finance, human resources and environmental sustainability as well as ANZ's back-office offshore capabilities.
David also has responsibility for ANZ's productivity agenda, functional responsibility for Operations and oversight of Operational Risk.
Before joining ANZ, David was Chief Executive Officer of iPSL a joint venture between Unisys, Lloyds TSB Bank, Barclays and HSBC processing 70% of the United Kingdom's cheques. Prior to this, David had a 22-year career in operations and technology at Barclays PLC. His roles at Barclays included Director, Operations and Client Experience, Private Clients and International; Managing Director, Service Delivery; and Managing Director, Barclays Technology Services.
David has a MA/BA from Oxford and was awarded a Sloan Fellowship with Distinction from London Business School.
